OUR LADY OF MERCY COLLEGE – BRIGID SHELLY

Restoring and transforming the historic Brigid Shelly Building for a new era of education.

Novati Constructions was awarded a Construct Only contract to refurbish and
extend the historic Brigid Shelly Building at Our Lady of Mercy College (OLMC) in Parramatta.

This refurbishment and extension project showcases the wonderful integration
of innovation and heritage, as it preserves the antique aesthetics of the Brigid Shelly Building, a while embracing the future.

The existing classroom spaces within the historic Brigid Shelly Building were
transformed into flexible and contemporary general purpose learning areas (GPLAs), while the Building’s new four-storey extension contains a new 200-seat auditorium with retractable seating, 18 new state-of-the-art classrooms that pave the way for future learning and teaching models, and new inside/outside spaces that incorporate green cover and open spaces.

This project is one of the first within the educational sector for its use of Cross
Laminated Timber (CLT) and Glue-Laminated Timber (Glulam). Novati worked closely with Mayoh Architects and ACOR Consultants in the hybrid application of these innovative materials. The 557m2 of CLT used for structural systems, such as floor slabs, came from Albury Wodonga (NSW), and the 219lm of Glulam used for beams came from Maryborough (Queensland). The use of these materials allowed the Project to achieve a smaller environmental footprint and meet OLMC’s strong commitment to sustainability. It also allowed OLMC to accelerate their construction timelines as CLT is faster to install compared to traditional materials.

As a result of Novati’s commitment to quality and focus on building strong
relationships with our clients and stakeholders, the demands of this heritage
restoration and renovation project, whilst working within a live environment,
was successfully achieved by the Novati Team.
