The Vaughan Building was extended with another floor to house a Library.
The space vacated by the Library is utilised for 11 classrooms and an English Department Staff Room. The existing Vaughan Building was also extended by 8 metres to the west over an existing pathway adjacent to Gorman Field.
The Vaughan building was built in the early 1970’s and is of concrete frame construction with infill brickwork and metal windows. The architectural style has little sympathy for the adjoining buildings in the Main Quadrangle Precinct, the Dalton Chapel and St Michael’s House; all of which have strong architectural significance.
The Vaughan building is part of the complex which includes the Therry building. The Therry building and the north-south access of the Vaughan building were added to and renovated in the early 2000’s in a project known as the O’Neill Science Wing and Middle School.
These additions and alterations to the western wing of the Vaughan bring this part of the building up to the architectural quality of the earlier renovation. The existing building is part 2 storey / part 3 storey.
The addition of the Library creates a third level as viewed from the Gorman Field. From the driveway to the east, the extra floor is barely visible over what presents as a three storey facade.
Previously 2 bridges separated the Vaughan and Wallace Wings but a new lightweight bridge from the Library Level across to the Wallace Wing was created.
