ST IGNATIUS – MIDDLE SCHOOL
MIDDLE SCHOOL AND SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
The original proposal for this project related to new work and refurbishment of existing buildings to be known as Middle School and Science Department. The proposal included the upgrade of science facilities at the College and centralisation of Middle Schooling to one section of the campus.
The Middle School was for Years 7, 8,and 9 and the Science Department was for the whole Senior School. The Science Department replaced existing laboratories, which no longer served the needs of the current science curriculum. The centralisation of the Middle School required the principle for home classrooms and the associated pastoral care.
The concept was to renovate both existing buildings namely the Therry and Vaughan Buildings to add the Middle School concept. These buildings were then linked to create the Science Department. This gave the opportunity to create a new facade to the east as viewed from the lower main drive in the 1st field.
Careful consideration in this academic precinct of the College was required for the outside areas adjacent to the classroom space. It was proposed to create a hard paved quadrangle between the Middle School and St John’s House immediately off the classrooms.
In addition larger paved areas were necessary for the 600 boys of the Middle School and thus to re-locate the roadway and create a level surface adjacent to the eastern elevation. A landscape proposal was also set out as part of the submission to finalise existing landscape treatments, which was more appropriate to the academic precinct.
